SCIENTIFIC NOTE Fleas Occurring on Mice During the Mouse Population Explosion in the Western Side of Leeward Oahu, Hawaii
نویسندگان
چکیده
A survey of fleas on mice during the mouse population explosion that occurred in eight communities in the western side of leeward Oahu was carried out in the summer of 2006. A total of 1440 mice were obtained. 305 oriental rat fleas, Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild) were recovered from these mice. No significant difference existed for the flea infestation rates, the average number of fleas per mouse (the flea index) and the average number of fleas per infested mouse among the communities. Overall, the flea indexes appeared high, indicating that a large number of fleas would be produced during an increase in mouse populations.

Rickettsia typhi and R. felis in Rat Fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis), Oahu, Hawaii
Rickettsia typhi (prevalence 1.9%) and R. felis (prevalence 24.8%) DNA were detected in rat fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) collected from mice on Oahu Island, Hawaii. The low prevalence of R. typhi on Oahu suggests that R. felis may be a more common cause of rickettsiosis than R. typhi in Hawaii.
متن کاملOccurrence and Behavior of Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris) Along Oahu’s Leeward and South Shores
The spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) is a delphinid that occurs in both pelagic and coastal tropical and subtropical habitats worldwide. A model of the behavior and ecology of this species was described for a resident population along the Kona coast of the island of Hawaii by Norris et al. (1994). To assess the applicability and variability of this model in divergent coastal habitats, th...

The diversity and geographical distribution of fleas parasitizing small mammals have been poorly investigated on Indian Ocean islands with the exception of Madagascar where endemic plague has stimulated extensive research on these arthropod vectors. In the context of an emerging flea-borne murine typhus outbreak that occurred recently in Reunion Island, we explored fleas' diversity, distributio...
متن کاملNMFS 101 March 1991 Larvae of Nearshore Fishes in Oceanic Waters near Oahu , Hawaii
Larvae of over 50 families of nearshore fishes were taken in oceanic waters about 13 km offshore of the leeward (southwest) coast of Oahu, Hawaii during 1977-78, The five most frequently taken families (Labridae, Parapercidae, Serranidae, Gobiidae, and Carangidae) made up over 50 % of the total nearshore larvae. Most other families were taken very infrequently. Comparison of catch data from thr...
متن کاملQuantitative Relationships between Fleas and Rodents in a Hawaiian Cane Field!
Relative numbers of Xenopsylla vexabilis Jordan on Rattus eXlt/ans (Peale) and Mus musculus L. and in their nests were determined monthly in a field of maturing sugar cane at Kukuihaele, island of Hawaii, January 1962-March 1963, in a preliminary study using nest boxes and live traps. Mean numbers of fleas in active rat nests were most closely correlated with mean numbers of fleas infesting rat...
